The play The Unicellulars, written by Jalal Tehrani (composed in spring 2002), explores the human condition, loneliness, the philosophy of time, power relations, and the recurring cycles of human existence. The text is made up of several parallel storylines, narrated through multi-level staging with independent frames of light.
- Piri and Elari (The Unicellulars): Piri is an elderly man who spends the entire time sewing cloth dolls.
- Salar and Salem (The Journey, the Museum, and the Equator): Salar is a boastful, would-be philosopher who rides on Salem’s shoulders or sits in a wheelbarrow.
- Farmandeh and Farkhandeh (Behind the Microscope): Two inspectors or agents sit behind a large desk, examining the evidence of a crime under a microscope.
