Listen to the Sound of the Earth

For many audiences and critics, Listen to the Sound of the Earth was Jalal Tehrani’s most adventurous theatrical production. Rather than following a conventional dramatic structure, the performance was constructed as a continuous chain of interconnected theatrical passages. Its textual fabric wove together a short story titled “Others”, a short play entitled “The Silver”, selected poems, and a series of original dialogues written specifically for the production. One of the production’s most distinctive features was the collaboration of several of Iran’s leading contemporary poets, including Zia Movahed, Maftoon Amini, Mohammad-Ali Sepanlou, Mohammad-Reza Aslani, and Ali Babachahi. During the performances, each of these poets appeared in person to read selections from their own poetry for the audience, dissolving the conventional boundary between theatrical performance and live literary recital. Their presence transformed the production into a unique encounter between theatre and contemporary Persian poetry, making poetry itself an active component of the dramatic event rather than a supplementary artistic element.
