Hamidreza Ardalan
Jalal Tehrani’s work is distinguished by two important characteristics.
The first is his use of language, through which he reconstructs the meanings of words, sentences, and dramatic texts. This renewed use of language reminds both the actor and the audience that what they hear should not be understood through habit or convention. Instead, every word, every sentence, and every line invites a fresh interpretation.
Tehrani deliberately repeats words, phrases, and sentences so that both actors and audiences encounter them in a new context, allowing new meanings to emerge with each repetition.
The second characteristic is his exploration of the relationship between the self and the other. His work encourages people to rediscover themselves while recognizing the presence of others as something profound and transformative.
For this reason, Tehrani’s theatre possesses a distinctly phenomenological dimension. He has developed a form of contemporary Iranian theatre that is deeply rooted in its own cultural context while also speaking to universal human experience.
