La Musica III

With La Musica III, Jalal Tehrani returned to the Maktabe Tehran Theatre. The production is based on Marguerite Duras’s La Musica and was developed with performers drawn from Tehrani’s acting workshops at Maktabe Tehran. The ensemble spent two years rehearsing the work before bringing it to the stage. Together with Autumn Sonata, La Musica III belongs to a distinct body of Tehrani’s productions that engage directly with the works of major predecessors. Rather than functioning as  straightforward adaptations, these productions establish a dialogue with earlier texts, incorporating explicit references to and reinterpretations of canonical dramatic literature within Tehrani’s own theatrical language. Alongside these productions, Tehrani has written several plays that explore the same literary territory but had not yet received public productions by 2020. These include Macbeth 2001, Dracula, Elementary Hamlet (Hamlet-e Dabestani), and The King’s Autumn (Payiz-e Padshah).

La Musica III also represents a continuation of Tehrani’s long-term investigation into what he calls “Amateur Theatre.” This concept emerged from more than two decades of personal research and practical experimentation, gradually evolving into a distinctive performance methodology and theatrical framework that underpins many of the projects developed at Maktabe Tehran.
